CD REVIEW: JOEL MARTIN'S "THE TIPPING POINT"

Joel Martin
The Tipping Point
(Independent)
Pop/Rock
4 out of 5 Stars

Independent artist Joel Martin has performed for the Prime Minister, worked with the likes of bands such as Rush, and works and records in one of the most lucrative studios in all of Canada, Metalworks.    He even performed his music 500 times so far and has appeared as a semi-finalist on Canadian Idol.

On this, his 12th album, it is a short (17 minutes) but very pithy and catchy collection of songs worthy of radio airplay.    Some of the songs are very catchy and witty (Discount Sugar Daddy and My Boss), resembling the Steven Page-led Barenaked Ladies in its heyday.     Joel Martin’s voice is very youthful and full of life, and it is a voice that will endear listeners to his music more and more.

What I like about its brevity is that the music says what it wants to say in a to-the-point fashion.     Pop albums that are full length can go into the tendency of sameness and redundancy, but leaving it to EP status gives the audience wanting more.

I really encourage people to pick up this latest album, and to follow this artist on various channels including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and his web site.
